It's extremely important to remember that we're in this situation entirely because of Trump's decision to tear up the Iranian nuclear deal because he was on a quest to destroy everything Obama did. Had he not done that, Iran would not be nearing a nuclear weapon, and the US would not be involved in another Middle East war. This entire situation of his own creation, and only due to his stupidity, narcissism, and ego.

The Iranian proxies encircling Israel(Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis) are in a temporarily weakened state. That probably won't last forever. If those entities were at full strength, an Israeli attack on Iran would have brought missile and rocket salvos from 4 directions towards Israel, and resulted in a lot more damage. 

The Iranians lost their Syrian vassal with the fall of the Assad regime, and have more difficulty moving equipment to Hezbollah. They couldn't fast track missiles to Hezbolla as the conflict began. 

Russia is dealing with Ukraine and not able to assist with military hardware. To the contrary, Iran has been sending excess military hardware to Russia for awhile. 

Iran and Israel already traded missile barrages twice in 2024, and apparently, the Israelis made headway in destroying Iranian air defense. That would eventually be repaired by Iran. 

In other words, the stars temporarily aligned, the Israelis saw a window of opportunity, and used it to take a swipe at an Iranian nuclear program they've never trusted. Possibly also a little delayed payback for October 7th, as Hamas is backed by Iran.

A bunch of reasons. 

Primarily, October 7th shattered Israel's belief that simply holding a strong posture would be enough to deter organized military incursions from local militant groups. Hamas, Hezbollah, houthis, all have been trained and funded by Iran, and all have declared either the complete destruction of Israel or the jihad (holy war) against jews as their primary goal. 

Because of this, Israel has crossed a bunch of red lines to destroy these militant groups, as can be seen in the unprecedented humanitarian crisis they've created in Gaza. While the damage to Gaza has been the most publicized, Israel has also invaded territory in Lebanon to capture Mount Hermon to get radar superiority over Lebanon territory, and decimated hezbollah with air strikes and the pager attack. The pager attack not only eliminated hundreds and hundreds of leadership but also crippled them by making them so exceedingly paranoid of technology that they don't even use air conditioning anymore. Lastly and possibly most significantly, they bombed the shit out of Syrian anti air defenses while they are divided by their own civil war, creating an unprecedented air corridor over Syria that they can use to safely loiter aerial refuelers that actually enable their bombers to run these round trip strike missions that actually exceed their normal range (distance of the flight is roughly 2000 km, one way). 

**All this created an unprecedented window for Israel to act without a green light or direct support from the USA.** A green light that the US would almost certainly not have given . Israel has strategically forced the hand of the US to make a choice in the middle east, and the nuclear weapons claim is the legal excuse they've given the US to get involved.

Israel attacked exactly 1 day after Trump's supposed 60 day deadline for nuclear deal talks, claiming that Iran was on the cusp of having nuclear weapons. Israel's was the ONLY intelligence agency that claimed this. Both the IAEA and US intelligence agreed that there was no evidence of a nuclear program in Iran. Israel also has a history of making such claims bogusly. However, it's not exactly a repeat of Iraq because we DO know that Iran WAS enriching uranium to near weapon grade. The IAEA found that Iran has enriched 400 kilos of 60% u-235. You only need 3-5% for energy or medical uses. And enriching uranium speeds up as you go, so it's much faster to go from 60% to 90% than to go from 0% to 30%. This quantity could have been refined into enough weapons grade uranium for 9 nuclear warheads within about a month. Not only was this enrichment a violation of existing treaties, but the IAEA also stated that Iran failed to justify any need for such enrichment. But enriched uranium alone is not a nuclear weapons program. Simply having enriched uranium doesn't mean you have an actual nuclear warhead.

Ultimately I think Israel went in because of ideal timing and as a continuation of the October 7th conflict, because they see all of their immediate threats as Iranian proxies, describing Iran as the "head of the octopus". They want regime change in Iran and think that defeating Iran is the path to ending terrorism against their nation, and this is the clearest path they've had to that goal, maybe ever. Russia's war in Ukraine could also be playing a role in the decision, since Russia is Iran's primary military ally outside of the middle east but are bogged down completely in Ukraine. The nuclear weapon claim isn't entirely bogus but they have been planning this attack for over a year and months of operations have built up to this attack, so I don't see it as anything more than their excuse to the international court to claim this attack as legally self defense. We also know based on their targeting that the uranium enrichment is only a side objective, because the first thing they targeted was not Natanz but a large swath of senior government leaders and scientists in their own residences. Of 3 uranium enrichment sites, Israel has only damaged 1 so far.

As an extra added context: Israel still needed novel modern war strategy to open a window in Iran's border of anti air weapons. For 8 months mossad agents inside of Iran were gathering drone parts and secretly assembling short range suicide drones. These drones were shipped and activated alongside several medium range missile attacks all in a coordinated attack on Iranian anti air weapons to create a safe corridor from the Iranian border all the way to Tehran. All of that had to happen for Israel to get bombers inside of Iran, otherwise they would be shot down long before being able to do any damage.
